This rare, unusual legume is native to southern Europe and was described by Fearing Burr in Field and Garden Vegetables of America (1863). The pods are narrow and twisted like caterpillars rolled up on themselves. Caterpillars may be added to salads to surprise unsuspecting diners, but are generally not meant to be eaten because they are so spiky. These low-growing plants with tiny yellow flowers make a beautiful ground cover and can be grown in containers if space is tight. This great historic novelty is sure to be a conversation piece!
