Pretty flowers and fantastic beans all in one.
Scarlet Runner Beans were introduced sometime before 1750, and are an ornamental edible climber. They were grown by the colonists that obtained seeds from the Native Americans. The plants bear large, showy sprays of bright scarlet flowers all summer, followed by loads of slender pods about 8" long. Pick them often to promote continuous flowering. A favorite with hummingbirds and butterflies!
