The Hussli Tomato Pepper is a small, heavy pepper with a shape reminiscent of an heirloom tomato.

An Ark of Taste, Slow Food variety.

The Hussli Tomato Pepper is a small, heavy pepper with a shape reminiscent of an heirloom tomato and thick walls that contribute to their weight. When fully ripe they turn a deep crimson red, but they are enjoyed when picked before full ripeness when fully green or just beginning to blush. Along with the Beaver Dam Pepper, the Hussli Tomato pepper was brought to Beaver Dam, WI from Hungary around 1912 by Joe Hussli and family. Hussli family members have been saving seeds and are responsible for the continued propagation of this remarkable variety. The Hussli tomato pepper is sweet and mildly spicy, though heat level varies significantly between peppers. The walls of the peppers are double the thickness of typical pepper varieties, giving them a meaty, yet crunchy texture and exceptional juiciness. It is excellent raw, and can also be pickled. The ripe peppers are also used in soups and stews and a dish originating from southern Louisiana called maque choux made with corn, peppers, onion, tomato and garlic. Non-Isolated.
